Speaker of the North Carolina House, Joe Hackney, was born in the district he now represents. He is currently serving his 14th two-year term and his 1st two-year term as Speaker.
Representative Hackney has been active in NCSL for several years. He is currently co-chair of NCSL's Task Force on Immigration and the States. He has served as chair of NCSL's Standing Committees, NCSL's Environment and Natural Resources Committee and spent three years on NCSL's Executive Committee.
Representative Hackney is a lawyer and a farmer. At the law practice in which he is a partner, he emphasizes civil litigation and domestic relations. He operates the family beef cattle farm in Chatham County, North Carolina with his brother.
Hackney graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967 with a degree in political science. In 1970, he received his law degree from the University of North Carolina Law School.
Hackney and his wife Betsy have two sons and live in southern Orange County, North Carolina.
