Sen. Balfour Will Help Lead National Legislative Organization
Georgia Republican previously held VP position, now will be president elect
NEW ORLEANS – Georgia Senator Don Balfour ascended to president elect of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that serves the nation’s 7,382 state lawmakers. He took office during NCSL's Legislative Summit in New Orleans on Saturday.
Sen. Balfour will serve one year in the position and become president during the 2009-2010 conference year. Sen. Balfour also is a member of the NCSL’s executive committee and served as vice president of the organization.
“The relationship between the states and the federal government is at a critical juncture,” said Sen. Balfour. “Congress’ inability to address the nation’s most pressing problems leaves it all up to state legislators. I’m excited to work with my colleagues around the country to facilitate the exchange of ideas to address these issues.”
Through out his political career, Sen. Balfour has helped Georgia pass some of the strongest ethics and eminent domain laws in the nation. His experience will help NCSL have a strong voice for state legislatures within the nation’s federal system of government.
Senator Balfour, of Snellville, was first elected to the Georgia Senate from the Ninth District in 1992 and has consecutively served for 14 years. A Republican, Sen. Balfour is chairman of the powerful Senate rules committee. In addition, he serves on the Georgia Senate appropriations, education and youth, and the health and human services committees.
NCSL is the bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
