What do Ben Franklin, the speaker of the US House and a Pulitzer Prize winning author have in common?    

They will all be in Boston for a national policy meeting. 

DENVER - Some of the best speakers since the revolution will be gathering in Boston for the National Conference of State Legislature's annual conference. 

State lawmakers from all 50 states have the opportunity to hear from more than 200 featured speakers August 5-9 in Boston, Massachusetts.  

Legislators will also have the opportunity to participate in over 200 policy discussions with national experts on issues such as Real ID, immigration, the environment, money, mortgages, school wellness and rural development.

Some of the most noted speakers will be Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, former White House chief of staff Andrew Card, historical author David McCullough and former White House advisor, David Gergen.

Former governor of Massachusetts and presidential candidate Michael Dukakis is also a Professor at Northeastern University, Massachusetts.  The son of Greek parents who immigrated to the United States, Dukakis became the first Greek-American to be nominated on the Democratic ticket.  Monday, August 6, 2007 12:15 pm - 2:45 pm 

Former NFL wide receiver and member of congress Steve Largent played 14 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks as a wide receiver.  At the time of his retirement in 1989, Largent held six major career records.  Largent is now the President and CEO of CTIA The Wireless Association.  He will discuss how broadband internet is an important key to the nation's leadership, and how state legislatures have an essential role in encouraging broadband.  Sunday, August 5, 2007 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Internet visionary Jimmy Orr is considered one of 25 people who are changing the world of the Internet and politics.  Orr served as President Bush’s White House e-communications director and spokesman. It was there he created “Ask the White House,” a live interactive effort where members of the Bush administration chat with the public. He also directed e-communications for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and now is the on-line editor of the Christian Science Monitor. Thursday, August 9, 2007 12:30-2:30 pm

Former US Secretary of Labor William "Bill" Brock is also a former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.  Brock served as chairman of the Republican National Committee after his tenure in the Senate.  Under President Ronald Reagan, he was appointed US trade representative.  He served in that position until being appointed Secretary of Labor in 1985.  Brock went on to manage Senator Bob Dole's presidential bid in 1987.  Wednesday, August 8, 2007 1:00 -2:30 pm

Independent filmmaker Frederick Wiseman is credited with hundreds of projects including State Legislatures, the story of the day-to-day workings of the Idaho legislature. The film records "the achievements, values, constraints and limitations of the democratic process," he says. Wiseman's documentary "Welfare" became the story for an opera. Recently he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chicago International Documentary Festival. Thursday, August 9, 2007 2:45-4:30 pm

Economist David A. Wyss is one of America’s leading experts on the economy. As chief economist at Standard and Poor’s in New York, he is responsible for S&P’s economic forecasts and publications.  He also co-authors the monthly Equity Insight and the weekly Financial Notes. Credentialed members of the media are welcome to attend any session at this premier state legislative event of the year.  There are no registration fees for journalists but they must register.  To do so, please present your press credentials at the onsite press room in Room 153 A of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston. 

NCSL is the bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staff of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
