Representative Hackney Elected Vice President of National Legislative Organization
NASHVILLE - State legislators and legislative staff from across America have elected North Carolina House Majority Leader Joe Hackney to the post of vice president of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan, nonprofit organization that works on behalf of state legislatures.
"We are very pleased that Representative Hackney is willing to dedicate his time and expertise to our organization," said NCSL Executive Director William Pound. "His service to NCSL over the years has been a valuable asset to our work in Washington, D.C. and to the enhancement of the legislative process around the nation."
A Democrat, Representative Hackney succeeds Delaware Representative Donna Stone to this post. Representative Stone, a Republican, ascended to the position of NCSL president-elect. NCSL's executive committee officer positions alternate each year between the two major parties.
Representative Hackney has been active in NCSL for a number of years. He is currently co-chair of NCSL's Task Force on Immigration and the States. He has served as chair of NCSL's Standing Committees, NCSL's Environment and Natural Resources Committee and spent three years on NCSL's Executive Committee.
Representative Hackney was born in the legislative district he now represents. He is currently serving his 13th 2-year term in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He is also co-chair of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators. Representative Hackney is a lawyer and a farmer. At the law practice in which he is a partner, he emphasizes civil litigation and domestic relations. He operates the family beef cattle farm in Chatham County with his brother.
As an NCSL Executive Committee officer, Representative Hackney hopes to grow participation in NCSL, emphasize its bipartisan nature, and help promote the exchange of ideas for saving money through efficiencies.
"This is a great opportunity to make a contribution to an organization that is extremely important for the states and for legislators," Representative Hackney said. "NCSL is a vital voice for common sense in Washington, D.C. and it's the preeminent continuing education organization for legislators across the country."
NCSL's Executive Committee officers and its Executive Committee guide the work of the organization.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
