Hurricane Katrina

September 2, 2005

Statement of NCSL President Steve Rauschenberger on the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

DENVER - "Hurricane Katrina has left a swath of destruction in her wake.  We all have been extremely heartbroken at the plight of many of her victims over the past several days.  The National Conference of State Legislatures would like to express its sympathy to all those, especially members of the state legislative community, who have been so deeply and adversely affected by this natural disaster.

"The nation's state legislators and legislative staff call on all Americans to do whatever they can to help the citizens of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to get back on their feet.  Donate money, volunteer time, give blood, say prayers.

"The images that have been haunting this country since Monday are extremely graphic and saddening.  We must harness this sense of civic pride and put it to good use.  Unfortunately, it has taken a natural disaster to create a cause behind which all Americans can rally.  Let us take this opportunity to come together as a nation and rise up from this difficult situation.

"The nation's state lawmakers stand at the ready to provide whatever assistance is necessary to assist Katrina's victims.  We look forward to working with our federal and local counterparts in this vitally important endeavor."
