SEATTLE - Spiritual fellowship transcended politics for a group of 50 delegates to the National Conference of State Legislatures meeting who gathered for a prayer breakfast, a common practice for many in their home states.
"In the Old Testament, our jobs are the equivalent to that of the kings," said Washington Senator Dave Schmidt. "Some were kings of small villages and with their jobs came a responsibility of leadership."
Sen. Schmidt read from Psalm 72 and drew parallels between the Bible's call to stewardship and the vocation of public service.
"Our job is taking care of people and ensuring justice is carried out," he noted.
Lawmakers from more than a dozen states were on hand and reported that weekly spiritual gatherings were organized in their home states during legislative sessions. Many are supported by Capitol Ministries, which offers Bible study, one-on-one ministry, and Biblical counseling to lawmakers, lobbyists and staff.
The prayer group also heard words of inspiration from Arizona businessman Harold Cole, who challenged lawmakers to nurture their own faith as a testament to others.
"None of us has the ability to change an individual -- except for ourselves," he said.
