Nominations Still Open For Top State Legislative Leader Award
Annual Excellence Award for Brings $10K Charity Donation
There's still time to nominate a legislative leader for the Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award.
This annual honor recognizes the contributions state legislative leaders make to strengthen the institution of the state legislature. The award is conferred on leaders who have worked to preserve and build public trust in the instruction of the state legislature and whose careers embody the highest principles of leadership: integrity, compassion, vision, and courage. To be eligible for the award, an individual must hold (or have held with the past two years) the position of State Senate President, Senate President Pro Tempore, Speaker of the House, Speaker Pro Tempore, Majority Leader or Minority Leader. The award is sponsored jointly by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation and the National Conference of State Legislatures and carries with it a $10,000 contribution that is presented to a charity or institution selected by the recipient. Last year, two leaders shared the award for the third time in its history. Connecticut House Minority Leader Robert M. Ward and South Carolina Speaker David H. Wilkins were co-recipients.
The Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award was first awarded in 1996 to former Massachusetts Senate President William Bulger for his career in public service. Since then, the nation's top state legislative organizations have used the award to honor legislative leaders who embody similar qualities of leadership and commitment. Award recipients are selected by an independent non-partisan Selection Committee comprised of distinguished acadamics and outstanding leaders from both the public and private sectors.
