MEDIA ADVISORY: Advanced Copies of Preemption, Mandate and Budget Reports Available

SEATTLE - Credentialed members of the media may obtain advanced copies of several reports (subject to an embargo agreement) to be released at the National Conference of State Legislatures' 'Strong States, Strong Nations' Annual Meeting this week.

NCSL will release its most recent editions of Preemption Monitor and Mandate Monitor at a press conference on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. PDT.  NCSL's Preemption Monitor tracks federal legislation that would usurp state authority on various state policy issues.  Mandate Monitor compiles a list of federal legislation that would require states to foot the bill for Congress' projects.

Journalists who would like to receive a copy of the Monitors must agree to embargo the information contained within the publications until August 16, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. PDT (3:30 p.m. EDT).

NCSL's State Budget Actions 2005 will be the focus of a news conference on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. PDT.  State Budget Actions is an annual report providing general fund budget information for the 50 states. It summarizes state finances in the previous fiscal year and provides the outlook for the next. Based on a yearly survey of legislative fiscal offices, the report provides an overview of state fiscal conditions and serves as an indicator of state fiscal trends.

Journalists who would like to receive a copy of State Budget Actions 2005 must agree to embargo the information contained within the publication until August 17, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. PDT (3:30 p.m. EDT).

To obtain a copy of any of the reports, please send an e-mail with your credentials and a statement agreeing to the embargo to press-room@ncsl.org.
