Hurricane Katrina: States Respond to a Nation in Crisis

Hurrican Katrina, one of the deadliest hurricanes to ever blow ashore, has left a swath of destruction in her wake.  The carnage that remains is sure to tax the abilities of the nation's public health and welfare systems as well as the nation's energy and natural resources.

HurricaneOver the coming months and years, state legislatures across the country will play an integral role in helping to rebuild not just the parts of the Gulf Coast that were destroyed but also the national economy and updating the programs and systems necessary to respond to future disasters.

This series of webpages, which will be updated often, is designed to serve as a resource guide for state legislators and legislative staff as they tackle many of the policy challenges associated with a natural disaster of this magnitude.
