Maryland Legislator Takes Helm of National Organization

SALT LAKE CITY - Maryland Delegate John Hurson today became the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan, nonprofit organization that works on behalf of the nation's state legislatures.  Delegate Hurson, a Democrat, succeeds Utah Speaker Marty Stephens, a Republican.

"Delegate Hurson has been an asset to the organization in so many ways," said NCSL Executive Director William Pound.  "His ability to forge consensus and reach across party lines will be a valuable resource to NCSL and its lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill this year."

Delegate Hurson becomes the first Free State legislator to lead the organization.  Hurson previously served as the majority leader in the Maryland House of Delegates and is currently the chairman of the Health and Government Operations Committee.  He was first elected to the House to represent Montgomery County in 1990.

"It is a great honor to serve as the leader of such a prestigious organization like NCSL," Hurson said.  "I am hopeful that during my tenure as president, we will be able to build on NCSL's successful record as an effective advocate on behalf of states' rights and as a forum for lawmakers to exchange and debate ideas."
