New Partnership Seeks Secure Movement of Goods, Information, People in Digital Economy

Business Roundtable, NCSL to look at identification systems

SAN FRANCISCO - Legislators and business leaders have joined forces to develop policy recommendations to allow the sharing of critical information and data while protecting the rights and privacy of individuals in a new public-private partnership. The new partnership will focus on policies that promote the secure movement of goods, information and people while protecting individual rights.

The Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of the nation's leading corporations, and the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization representing the nation's state legislators, are working together to ensure the security of our digital economy. Along with examining key issues, challenges and opportunities, the partnership will study the need for secure identification systems, identify policies and procedures, suggest solutions to flaws in current systems, advocate the need consistencies in data and systems and encourage governments and businesses to adopt effective security controls.

Edward Rust, CEO of State Farm Insurance and co-chairman of the Business Roundtable, announced the partnership at NCSL's 29th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The Business Roundtable and NCSL will work together to examine this critical ingredient of future economic growth. Officials from both organizations say their groups are uniquely positioned to share expertise and advice on issues that transcend city, state and national borders.

"This partnership will foster valuable communication," said Oklahoma Sen. Angela Monson, NCSL's President. "Cooperation between the public and private sectors is key to the protection of this county's people, technology and economy."

The initial goal of the Business Roundtable-NCSL partnership will be to analyze the potential benefits of policy approaches for identification systems and data sharing that are consistent and technologically sophisticated. The partnership aims to identify and address current flaws in the system. Topics the partnership will look at include the linking of intra-state, state-to-state, local and federal government databases.

The Business Roundtable is an association of the chief executive officers of leading U.S. corporations. It has a combined workforce of more than 10 million employees in the United States, and it is committed to advocating public policies that foster vigorous economic growth, a dynamic global economy, and a well-trained and productive American workforce.

NCSL is a bipartisan organization serving the legislators and legislative staff of the states, commonwealths and territories. Its mission is to improve the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures, foster interstate communication and provide the states a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system.
