Trying to Navigate NCSL
DENVER -- A former Virginia Capitol reporter is the National Conference of State Legislatures' newest resource for journalists and lawmakers looking for wide-angle views on what's happening in their backyards.
Nicole Casal, who covered the 2002 General Assembly in Richmond for a Shenandoah Valley daily newspaper, joins Gene Rose and Bill Wyatt in NCSL's public affairs division. Casal will also work in NCSL's Center for Ethics in Government under Director Peggy Kerns.
"NCSL is a reporter's candy shop, with so much useful data in one place," Casal said. "I'm truly thrilled at the opportunity to help find answers that will put states' issues into eye-opening national contexts."
NCSL is a bipartisan, non-profit organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. In its Denver office, more than 150 specialists track policy trends in subjects from agriculture to workforce development. Another 60 staff members in Washington, D.C. represent states' interests and also follow policy evolution.
Casal will assist with public relations and research for the Center for Ethics in Government, which, in 2002 published the first comprehensive look at ethics laws across the country.
In her four years writing for newspapers, Casal has been assigned to local government beats, education, health and agriculture in addition to the Virginia General Assembly. She has worked in California and Colorado and attended college in Ohio. Casal has degrees in English and mass communications from Miami University in Oxford.
She replaces Ginger Sampson, who moved to Helena, Montana this winter after serving NCSL since July 2001. Contact Casal at (303) 856-1525, or e-mail her at nicole.casal@ncsl.org.
