Training ResourcesLegislative Staff Management InstituteEffective legislatures are essential to democratic governance. The Legislative Staff Management Institute at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, assists the committed professionals who manage these diverse institutions which are central to our governmental system. The Humphrey Institute conducts the Legislative Staff Management Institute in partnership with the National Conference of State Legislatures and the John C. Stennis Center for Public Service, Training and Development. The purpose of the Legislative Staff Management Institute is to help senior level staff managers with a commitment to the legislative process develop their abilities in dispute resolution and conflict management, management of the legislative process, leadership, policy analysis, strategic planning, and use of information systems. Now in its ninth year, the Legislative Staff Management Institute offers participants drawn from America's state and territorial legislatures opportunities to enhance their management capacities, learn new ideas and techniques, and foster relationships with people doing similar work elsewhere in the country. More than 200 senior staff members from 41 states, the District of Columbia, and five territories have attended the Legislative Staff Management Institute to date.
