Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
July 24, 2003, San Francisco, CA
The Executive Committee met on Thursday, July 24, 2003, in San Francisco,
CA. Copies of handouts discussed during the meeting are kept on file with
the NLPES secretary.
Members present at the meeting were Martha Carter, Philip Durgin, Sherry
Hayashi, Steve Hendrickson, Ken Levine, Wade Melton, Heather Moritz, Tim
Osterstock, Manu Patel, and Kate Wade. Absent: Joe Lawhon. Also present
was Bob Boerner from NCSL.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Kate Wade, Chair, at 3:30
p.m.
Introductions
Sherry Hayashi (HI) and Steve Hendrickson (CA) were formally
welcomed to the NLPES Executive Committee.
Election of Secretary and Vice Chair
Philip Durgin was nominated and elected as Secretary on a voice
vote.
Two nominations were received for Vice Chair: Martha Carter and Wade
Melton. Martha Carter was subsequently elected as Vice Chair via written
ballots.

Committee Charges

Work with Rich Jones of NCSL to consider ways to develop contacts with
legislative district and personal staff.

Conduct a survey of NLPES members to assess what NCSL/NLPES services are
being used and what new services might be provided.

Professional Development and Training: As presented on 2003-04 Sub-Committee
Charges handout. A suggestion was made that we might want to have a joint
training conference with another NCSL staff section, such as the fiscal
staff section (NALFO).

Nominations and Elections: As presented on 2003-2004 Sub-Committee Charges
handout.
State Assignments
As presented on State Assignments for 2003-04 handout. The suggestion
was made that if there is no interest by a state, the NLPES member assigned
to that state can use his/her discretion in how much to pursue further
contact.

As presented on NLPES Calendar of Activities for 2003-2004 handout.
Next NLPES Executive Committee Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
October 15. Bob Boerner requested that if an NLPES Executive Committee
member knows they cannot attend a meeting, to please let him know as far
in advance as possible.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 4:15 p.m.
