2002 NLPES Excellence in Evaluation Award

The 2002 NLPES Excellence in Evaluation Award is presented to the Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau, Janice Mueller, State Auditor.

Wisconsin's submission met the award criteria for

meeting legislative need;
making an impact;
communicating effectively through its work products; and
assisting other NLPES offices.

The office has demonstrated a long history of timely evaluations on key policy issues for Wisconsin's Legislature. The Audit Bureau's depth and abilities were demonstrated in its recent series of reports on the Wisconsin Works (W-2) Program. The reports' high-quality analyses and well-developed findings resulted in legislative funding reallocation, gained national media attention, and prompted an additional inquiry by the U.S. General Accounting Office.

The Audit Bureau communicates its findings through full-length reports, smaller "letter reports" and best practices reviews. All publications are available electronically, and since December 2000, all of Wisconsin's audit hearings have been broadcast live over the Web. The office's staff also has been very active in NLPES activities, including providing research and evaluation consultation for their colleagues in other states.

NLPES congratulates Wisconsin for its service to the Wisconsin legislature and its many contributions to the field of program evaluation.
