NLPES Outstanding Achievement Award

The 2002 NLPES Outstanding Achievement Award is presented to Cheryl Ridings, former Deputy Director of the South Carolina Legislative Audit Council. This award recognizes Cheryl for her contributions and service to the field of legislative program evaluation and NLPES.

Cheryl was a teacher before joining the Legislative Audit Council in 1978. She received undergraduate degrees in French and elementary education from Columbia College, and she received a masters degree in education from the University of South Carolina.

Cheryl joined the Legislative Audit Council as an intern in 1978, and she was hired as an assistant auditor in 1979. She was elected to the NLPES Executive Committee and served as its secretary in 1987 and 1988. Cheryl was a strong advocate for professional development in program evaluation, as shown by her efforts at the council to develop and implement a training program, staff manuals, and audit standards. In addition, she and her South Carolina colleagues hosted the NLPES training conference in 1993. She was an outstanding liaison with the South Carolina Legislature and helped the Legislative Audit Council weather many storms over the years. Cheryl retired in January 2001.

NLPES thanks Cheryl for her leadership at the Legislative Audit Council and her contributions to the staff section, and we wish Cheryl well in her retirement.
