Consumers express great concerns about their privacy on the Internet, but at the same time they are increasingly going online to find information and make purchases.  Marketers are using tools to track online behavior that are invisible to many Internet users, and most consumers don’t know about available tools to protect their privacy.  This session reviews the Internet privacy issues that consumers are concerned with and the policy options being considered and adopted in state legislatures today.

Stopping Spam: Strategies for Effective Enforcement

Stopping unwanted and fraudulent e-mail advertising may seem like an impossible task. But tools are available to fight spam. Internet service providers and technology companies provide ways to help consumers fight spam, and are joining them in combating this shared problem. Regulatory agencies and law enforcement have also successfully prosecuted online consumer fraud. This session presents case studies illustrating how these tools work.

Internet Privacy and Spam Control

Among consumers' greatest concerns on the Net are spam and privacy. Legislatures have introduced hundreds of bills in recent years to address these concerns. This session looks at the kinds of information collected online, how it can be used for legitimate and fraudulent purposes, and what kinds of actions states can take to combat spam and protect personal information on the Internet.
