Implementing The REAL ID Act:  What’s Next for State Driver’s Licenses

After the passage of the REAL ID Act, states have less than three years to meet rigid federal standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards, or face their invalidation for official federal purposes.  The clock is ticking as states plan to implement these costly mandates and assess what the act means for privacy and civil liberties. (Sponsored by the Transportation Committee)

Senator Michael Balboni, New York

Speakers:
Cheye Calvo, NCSL

Jonathan Frenkel, Director, Law Enforcement Policy, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Washington, D.C.

Technology & Privacy:  Update on RFID (CLE)

In 2005, at least 11 states introduced privacy legislation relating to the use of radio frequency ID technology (RFID).  These small tags containing wireless tracking devices can be used by government and businesses to provide efficiencies in production, procurement, asset tracking, document management, waste management, and ID security.  But the technology also raises concerns that the tags could be linked to personal information.  Speakers will examine the policy issues RFID raises and discuss proposed state legislation.   (Co-sponsored by the Communications, Technology and Interstate Commerce Committee)
