Background Information
Many state legislatures have adopted policies governing the acceptable use of the Internet, e-mail, legislative websites, and computer equipment. The National Association of Legislative Information Technology has held several sessions at NALIT meetings to exchange information and policies, including an October 2000 session: Policies Revisited—E-mail, Internet Use, Equipment Use, and Monitoring. This site serves as an additional resource for examples of policies in various states. (Note: Some policies included on this site may have changed or no longer be in effect.)
Developing a PolicyIn 1997, the Center for Technology in Government at the University at Albany, State University of New York conducted A Brief Survey of Government Internet Policies to answer two questions: (1) What do state governments consider essential items to cover in an Internet policy? and (2) What kind of guidance do they give (e.g., very specific rules, guiding principles)?
