Managing for the Future

Social Events and Area Attractions |
Each year, new tools become available that allow us to do more with less. However, each increase in our resources is matched by our users’ rising expectations. And each new technology brings a new set of problems. We are accustomed to dealing with technical problems, but in today’s world we also are confronted with legal and regulatory issues, physical security threats, and tight finances. Coping with these interrelated issues will require great creativity and resources on the part of IT managers and technical leaders. The NALIT Professional Development Seminar provides guidance and training to help navigate these varied “opportunities.”
This year’s seminar again offers two tracks: one for technical specialists and one for managers and others who are interested in policy and management issues related to legislative information technology. Participants are welcome to attend sessions of interest in either track. Speakers for the seminar combine the knowledge of industry experts and the experience and expertise of legislative information technology staff.
The NALIT Seminar again offers two half-day in-depth training sessions on Wednesday, September 8, in addition to the regular seminar schedule of management and technical track sessions.
Integral to the seminar is the opportunity to exchange experiences with other legislative information technology staff in roundtable sessions and small group discussions. These sessions give participants the opportunity to share information and advice with colleagues about information technology projects.
Please join us for what promises to be a stimulating learning experience and a unique opportunity to meet with colleagues from other states.
SOCIAL EVENTS AND AREA ATTRACTIONS
Each year, Burlington, Vermont ranks as one of the nation’s most livable cities. Although small, it offers a wide variety of attractions and events in a stunning setting by the shores of Lake Champlain.
The NALIT conference will be held at the Wyndham Burlington Hotel, set on the hillside overlooking the waterfront. The hotel is within walking distance of the Church Street Marketplace, the Champlain Ferry dock, and the Burlington Bike Path, which runs for nine miles along the lake shore.
The conference will feature:
An opening reception,A bus trip alongside the Winooski River through central Vermont to the state capitol of Montpelier,
A visit to the beautiful Vermont State House,
A tour of the Ben & Jerry’s homemade ice cream factory and store,
An outing and closing dinner at the Shelburne Museum, which houses a collection of early Americana spread throughout 25 19th-century buildings, including a covered bridge, a round barn, a lighthouse, and a 220-foot restored steamboat that is a National Historic Landmark.
The seminar is a relaxed learning experience, and casual attire is recommended for all seminar programs and activities. Average temperatures in the Burlington and Montpelier areas in September range from lows of about 45° to highs of about 70°.
Attractions located within walking distance of the Wyndham Burlington Hotel include shopping at Burlington Town Center, Church Street Marketplace and Filene's. The hotel is also a short walk from many restaurants, theaters and other local attractions, including the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and the Leahy Echo Science Center.
On September 10-12, the Church Street Marketplace will host Marketfest, a festival celebrating the cultural diversity of Burlington with live world-beat music and an international craft fair.
