Connecting on the Net: Legislators
and Citizens Online (Concurrent Session)
(Co-sponsored by NALIT and the Communications and Information Policy
Committee)
Legislative proceedings are broadcast live on the Internet. Citizens
express support or opposition to bills online. Draft legislation is posted
on the Web and public comment is sought. Citizens are expecting more from
legislators online-more information about bills and the legislative process
and more access to legislators via the Internet and e-mail. This session
will look at innovative uses of the web by legislatures and provide practical
tips for managing all aspects of electronic communications with constituents.
Moderator:
Senator Robert Jauch, Wisconsin

Sharon Crouch, House of Delegates, Virginia

Implementing
Linux and Windows 2000 in the Legislative Environment
The Main Event! In one corner: the upstart challenger, wearing a red
hat, holder of the open source title belt - Linux! In the other corner:
the new and improved champion (#5), wearing a blue visor, undisputed holder
of the heavyweight moneybelt - Microsoft Windows 2000! Is the success and
supremacy of Windows 2000 inevitable? Is it advisable? Is Linux truly a
viable alternative? Is there a place for open source software in the legislature?
Come to this session to get around the hype and the rhetoric and get the
facts on both Linux and Windows 2000. Which should you choose? Why? And
what will be the implications of that choice?
Speakers:
Tim Rice, Legislative Information System, Illinois
Sean Johnson, House of Representatives, Florida
