Supreme Court Library Tour
Located in the heart of the French Quarter, the Louisiana Supreme Court Building is a feast for the eyes.  This beautiful marble Beaux-Arts style building was originally opened in 1910 for the Court, vacated in 1958 for more modern chambers, sat in ruins for decades, and was finally restored again in 2004. While touring, the legislative research librarians will have a chance to see the Law Library of Louisiana, the rare book room, the Court Chambers, and the new Louisiana Supreme Court Museum.  Grand portraits of all the chief justices hang on the walls of the museum.  Several exhibit cases contain materials about the Plessy v. Ferguson case which established the doctrine of "separate but equal".  (At the opening reception for this museum, the descendants of both Homer Plessy and Judge Ferguson were in attendance.) This elegant and imposing building will be a most interesting historical tour.

3:45 pm - 5:15 pm Historic New Orleans Collection Tour
The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.

In a complex of historic French Quarter buildings, the collection operates a museum, which includes the Williams Gallery for changing exhibitions and the Louisiana History Galleries tracing Louisiana’s multifaceted past; the Williams Residence (a house museum); a museum shop; and administrative offices.

The Williams Research Center, which is located a few blocks away from the galleries, opened in 1996. WRC makes available to researchers the collection’s printed holdings which comprise some 35,000 library items. That is more than two miles of documents and manuscripts and approximately 350,000 photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, and artifacts.

The Williams Center's photographic and pictorial record of the city plays an important role in the city as it rebuilds, while the Center also serves as the archive of the Greater New Orleans Plan for a new New Orleans.  LRL will observe how the Center preserves a wide range of fragile media and learn how they planned for and recovered from a major disaster.
