Susan Altgelt

Susan Altgelt is the Coordinator of Distance Learning at the Education Service Center, Region 20, in San Antonio.  She has worked in the field of distance learning for over twenty years. Originally a Spanish teacher, she taught on one of the first educational satellite networks offering interactive high school classes to students nationwide. Subsequently, she began working in the field of online learning developing a third year Spanish course for high school students.  Currently, in addition to overseeing online development and satellite-delivered classes for migrant students, she manages and develops the content broadcast for students (PreK-12) on the ESC-20 videoconference network.  Susan Altgelt holds a Master's Degree in Spanish from the University of New Mexico.

Dale C. Alverson, M.D.

As Medical Director of the UNM Telehealth and Cybermedicine Research Program, Dr. Dale Alverson is responsible for the development, coordination and administration of the Program.  He also facilitates clinical assessments and protocol development activities and he represents the Program before the New Mexico Legislature.  Dr. Alverson has received the following awards: the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association, New Mexico Affiliate in 1992; Outstanding Media Person from the New Mexico Hospital Association in 1993; and the University of New Mexico Regent Professorship Award in 1994-97.  Dr. Alverson received his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1974.  He received his Pediatrics subspecialty degree from the University of Colorado at Denver, Colorado in 1977; and his Neonatal/Perinatal medicine degrees from the University of Michigan in 1981 and from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1982.

Gary Chapman is director of The 21st Century Project and is a member of the faculty at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the graduate school of public policy at the University of Texas at Austin.  He is also associate director of UT's Telecommunications and Information Policy Institute.  The 21st Century Project is a research and education program on technology policy with a special emphasis on telecommunications and the Internet.  Its past research projects have included work on the "digital divide," rural broadband, smart cards, and networking the developing world.  Now the project is focused on helping the State of Texas use information technology to improve mental healthcare.  Gary Chapman has also been a columnist for The Los Angeles Times, The Austin American-Statesman and Texas Monthly magazine, which named him, in 2000, one of the "25 Most Powerful Texans in High Tech."  Gary Chapman was educated at Occidental College and Stanford University and served in the United States Army Special Forces.

Susanna Garza

Susanna Garza is the Coordinator of Instructional Technology at the Education Service Center, Region 20, in San Antonio.  She obtained her teacher certification in 1989 after moving to the U.S.  She taught in public schools for six years. She has been working at the Education Service Center, Region 20 since 1995, first as a distance learning teacher, then as a Distance Learning Educational Specialist, and more recently as the Coordinator of Instructional Technology and Media.  Ms. Garza oversees numerous initiatives including technology integration professional development, a statewide virtual library program, technology planning, and starting in January 2006, the ESC-20 Apple Training Center.  Susanna Garza graduated from medical school at Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City.
