Crime Prevention, Intervention and Interdiction In A Capitol Environment This seminar will change the way we think about "crime" in our Capitols. By proper use of the disciplines of crime prevention, community policing, natural surveillance, territoriality, way finding and other approaches to the prevention of crime, we will examine the use of the built environment as a tool to reduce criminal opportunity as well as increase the satisfaction that our citizens need when visiting our Capitols. A discussion will be had that brings together architects, engineers, planners, facility managers, security experts, police, staff and other stakeholders who know that the true victory over crime is an open, accessible and safe environment. Timothy McVeigh and Osama Bin Laden must not become the new architects of our Capitols.

The Virginia State Capitol: Restoring Jefferson's Icon. When Thomas Jefferson looked to a Roman Classical temple to inspire his design of the Virginia Capitol, he gave substance to the concept of Monumental Classicism. Following a two-year restoration and expansion, the Virginia Capitol re-opened to critical and popular praise on May 1, 2007. James Wootton, Executive Director of the Capitol Square Preservation Council, explores the Capitol's history and the recently completed project that has enabled the Capitol to remain both an icon of civic architecture and Virginia's ongoing seat of government, a role it has played since 1788.
