Divided Government in the States
March 17, 2003

Return to Elections

Over the last 50 years there has been a major increase in the number of states with divided control of government--defined as at least one chamber of the legislature of the opposite party of the governor. Since 1984 more than half the states have had divided government in every election. The high was 31 states after both the 1988 and 1996 elections.
