The New Americans

The New Americans is a seven-hour PBS miniseries premiering March 29, 30 & 31, 2004. The series explores the dreams of a diverse group of recent immigrants and refugees before they leave their homelands and follows their first years in America. The New Americans is produced by Kartemquin Films (the creators of Hoop Dreams).

NCSL was invited to preview film clips from this series for state legislators and staff. Screenings have been held at the NCSL Annual Meetings in San Antonio (2001) and in San Francisco (2003). NCSL is also a partner with the outreach campaign to promote integration of new Americans through civic education activities.

 ActiveVoice and Kartemquin Films have created additional materials - shorter video modules and curriculum - for schools, workplaces, and community organizations to increase understanding of recent immigrants.
