Oral health is essential to health and well-being throughout the lifespan and is a marker for overall health status. Over the past half-century, advances in biomedical, health services, and behavioral research have led to safe and effective means of maintaining oral health that prevents tooth decay and periodontal disease. Unfortunately, these improvements in oral health have not been equally shared among the U.S. population, and significant disparities in oral health exist among children from families with low-income and from minority groups. In order to maximize the impact of oral health programs and services, state public health agencies are increasingly working to integrate oral health programs and services into Maternal and Child Health. This session will look at the current status of oral health care in the U.S. and state innovations that are making a difference.
