This informative web-assisted audioconference took place on March 7, 2005: “Should Children Take Psychotropic Drugs?” There has been a steady increase in the use of psychotropic medicine to treat children. In late 2003, the issue erupted in the media after the Food and Drug Administration announced research results revealing a slight risk of increased suicidal thoughts and behavior in children who take them. Many states have considered legislation to restrict the use of psychotropic medicine, fueling the debate around possible side effects of these medications versus the consequences of untreated mental illness. This conference featured expert analysis of the clinical issues, and a discussion of how to provide access to effective treatment while preserving child safety. This web-assisted audioconference is funded by a generous grant from the MacArthur Foundation.
