This conference featured expert analysis of the policy implications of elevated unemployment levels, declining private health insurance coverage and Medicaid cost cutting on community health centers.

Since the first one opened its doors 40 years ago, community health centers have specialized in providing affordable primary and preventive care services to our nation's poor and underserved people, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.  They serve nearly 3,600 communities across the country-about 15 million people.  Fulfilling this mission has become increasingly more difficult with the rising number of uninsured Americans, elevated unemployment levels among lower wage workers, and state Medicaid cost-cutting reforms-the single most important source of health center financing.  This conference provided an updated profile of health centers and an analysis of the impact that Medicaid cost cutting has had on health centers and their patients as well as the opportunity to discuss the situation with three national experts.

Sara Rosenbaum, JD., [SLIDE SHOW] Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law and Policy and Chair of the Department of Health Policy at the George Washington University Medical Center, School of Public Health and Human Services.  Professor Rosenbaum also directs the Hirsh School of Public Health and Health Services.
