US-Mexico Border States Health Promotion Policy Institute
April 4-6, 2003

In the Spring of 2003, the Health Promotion Program at NCSL hosted the US-Mexico Border States Health Promotion Policy Institute. The objectives of this meeting were to:

    • To increase state policymakers' knowledge of chronic disease prevalence and prevention (cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes) and strategies to reduce health disparities related to chronic diseases in the U.S.-Mexican border region.
    • To increase state policymakers' knowledge of risk factors related to chronic disease prevention (improved nutrition, increased physical activity and tobacco use reduction).
    • To explore roles that state legislators play to develop effective health promotion and disease prevention policies and activities in the U.S.-Mexican border region.
    • To stimulate dialogue among state legislators, state health department staff, private and non-governmental organizations about health promotion and chronic disease prevention in the U.S. Mexican border region.
