"Policy Guide on Community and Regional Food Planning"

A burgeoning movement is seeking to include food systems and food security in public planning decisions, as food issues have been largely ignored among professional planners. Policy concerns such as "food deserts", which are neighborhoods or communities without access to healthy and fresh food, and the development of productive farmland, may well be the result of this disconnect. Now, the American Planning Association (APA) has put together a policy guide on community and regional food planning, with findings on the issues facing American communities with regards to the growing, processing, distribution, and access issues related to food. The APA then lays out seven general policies with specific examples of how these policies could be put into practice, such as conducting assessments of prime farmland within an expected developing area or encouraging mixed-use design that would allow smaller grocery stores and farmers' market to thrive.
