"Farmed Out"
A recent series in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer closely examines the burgeoning farm-to-school movement at the local and state level, with a particular emphasis on identifying the institutional barriers that impede farm-to-school programs, such as a lack of processing facilities, stretched school meal funds, insufficient transportation and distribution networks, and training needs for school food service personnel. The articles also explore the opportunity for local foods to expand into other outlets, such as hospitals and correctional facilities.
An update to this series examines a soon-to-be introduced piece of legisaltion that woudl expand access and funding for local food in low-incole schools and farmers' maerkets, as well as study how to better connect state institutions with local growers. Click here for the updated article.
