"The Farmers' Market Effect"
A new study published in the American Journal of Public Health and highlighted in the New York Times shows a positive correlation between shopping at farmers' markets and increased purchasing of fresh produce. Women participating in the Women, Infants, and Children program (W.I.C.) who were given vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables increased their consumption of produce, but those who shopped at farmers' markets bought about twice the amount of produce compared to shoppers at grocery stores. Participants stated that the freshness and appearance of the fruits and vegetables, combined with the community feel of farmers' markets, were part of the impetus for increased purchasing.
