New England Health Promotion Institute
September 30 - October 2, 2001

NOW AVAILABLE! The National Conference of State Legislatures Health Promotion Program held a New England Health Promotion Institute in Nashua, New Hampshire, September 30-October 2, 2001, that included sessions on cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, physical activity, nutrition, obesity and tobacco. This report reviews progress that the six New England states have made toward implementing their action plans, including a review of legislation introduced during the 2002 session.

In the fall of 2001, the Health Promotion Program at NCSL hosted the first Health Promotion Institute. The objectives of this meeting were to:

  • Increase state policymakers' knowledge about chronic disease prevalence and prevention (arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes) and strategies to eliminate health disparities related to chronic diseases.
  • Increase state policymakers' knowledge about risk factors that support health promotion and disease prevention (tobacco, nutrition and physical activity.
  • Explore roles that state legislators play to develop effective health promotion and disease prevention policies and activities in their respective states.
  • Stimulate dialogue among state legislators, state health department staff and private, nonprofit organizations about health promotion and chronic disease prevention.
