Dr. Gayle K. Porter

Dr. Gayle K. Porter is a licensed, clinical psychologist.  She is currently a Principal Research Analyst and a Senior Mental Health Advisor for the Technical Assistance Partnership (TAP) of The American Institutes for Research. The TAP is funded by the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families of the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Technical assistance is provided to over 65 grant communities, which offer mental health services to children with emotional disturbances and their families.  Dr. Porter is responsible for ensuring that these communities have information about effective and evidence based interventions, which are appropriate for the diverse diagnostic and demographic populations they serve.

Prior to joining the TAP staff, Dr. Porter was on the faculties of Johns Hopkins’ Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department and Howard University’s Psychology Department. Dr. Porter was the director of the School Based Program (SBP) of The East Baltimore Mental Health Partnership (EBMHP) of Johns Hopkins’ University/Hospital. EBMHP was one of the first federally funded System of Care programs. The SBP was featured on ABC’s Nightline as an example of a program that had a documented positive impact on violence reduction. It was also showcased in two videos one of which won an award:” Voices of Strength: An Inside Look at Children’s Mental Health Issue” and  “Promising Practices for Safe and Effective Schools.” She also directed two outpatient mental health clinics for children and families for the Washington, D.C. Commission on Mental Health Services.

Dr. Porter has received numerous awards and has also contributed articles on mental health care to several journals. She recently completed a chapter for the Handbook of Child and Adolescents Systems of Care: The New Community Psychiatry edited by Andres J. Pumeriega, M.D. and Nancy Winters M.D. published by Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 2003 and co-authored a book with Dr. Marilyn Gaston-Prime Time: The African American Woman’s Complete Guide to Midlife Health and Wellness published by Random House, One World/ Ballantine Publishing Co. 2001.
