NCSL: Forum for State Health Policy Leadership

The Health Chairs Project

In 1997, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) created the Health Chairs Project. The Health Chairs Project evolved out of the recognition that health committee chairs are among the most important health policy leaders in the states. They carry major responsibilities in shaping public policy in a critical, dynamic and sometimes volatile sector of our society. And yet, they have often been overlooked and underutilized as a group relative to other participants in state health policy making.

The Health Chairs Project was established to help this important group of leaders from across the country become even more effective health policy leaders in their states and nationally. The Project provides opportunities for regular contact and interaction among the chairs to share information and experiences. Health committee chairs receive all the educational materials produced by the Project staff, along with numerous training opportunities and access to technical services.

The Health Chairs Project is the sister project of the Critical Health Areas Project (CHAP). Funding for the Chairs Project comes from a grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
