REDUCING HEALTH DISPARITIES: AN NCSL AUDIOCONFERENCE

On January 10, 2002, NCSL hosted an audioconference, "Strategies for Reducing Health Disparities," which brought together experts to discuss health disparities - their causes as well as strategies for reducing them.

Dr. Helen Burstin, Director of the Center for Primary Care Research at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) provides an overview of the issues: what do we know about health disparities and how reliable are our data? How do poverty and lack of insurance, for example, contribute to health disparities? Dr. Burstin describes factors contributing to disparities in health status and quality of care and highlights challenges to implementing effective intervention strategies. View Presentation

Dr. Felicia Collins, Lead Staff for the Health Disparity Initiative at the Bureau of Primary Health Care, Health Resources and Services Administration, describes strategies identified by HRSA to close the disparities gap. Among them: diversifying the health care workforce, reducing disease and morbidity/mortality in targeted clinical areas and increasing utilization by underserved populations. View Presentation
