Representative Shay Schual-Berke Washington State
In her fourth term representing South King County (33rd District), Rep. Schual-Berke is a retired cardiologist and the only medical doctor in the Legislature. As a state legislator, and previously as an elected director of the Highline School Board, Shay has been a leader in improving the quality of health care services in Washington State. Rep. Schual-Berke has been the lead sponsor of several landmark healthcare proposals, including the Patients' Bill of Rights (1999) and the Mental Health Parity legislation which was signed into law in 2005.
Shay serves on the boards of Wesley Homes Retirement facility and the Washington Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and has also served on the Highline School Board, King County Oversight Panel on Teen Health Clinics, and the National Council of State Legislatures' Forum for Health Policy. Shay was selected as a Fellow of the Flemming Leadership Institute (2000). She has received numerous awards while in the Legislature, most recently in 2005 being honored by the Mental Health Parity Coalition, named a "Friend of the Navy" for her work in predatory lending, and receiving the Highline Council PTSA Advocacy for Youth Award. She serves on the Health Care, Appropriations, and Capital Budget committees.
