Glossary of Terms

Access—laws that relate to the locations, procedures, or processes through which an individual with functional impairments gains entry to services.

Adult Day Care—laws that pertain to programs that provide support or supervision in a during the day for functionally impaired older adults.

Alzheimer’s—laws that address coverage, access, research, regulation or programming and/or methods of financing programs for persons with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive impairments.

Assessment—laws that pertain to the processes or tools used to determine financial or functional eligibility for services  and to develop an appropriate service plan.

Assisted Living—laws that pertain to residential settings which provide supportive services for older persons with functional impairments.

Consumer-Directed Care—laws that pertain to strategies through which consumers direct all or some aspects of the personal assistance or other services they receive.

Family Caregiver—laws that pertain to individuals who are related to a care recipient and who provide formal or informal support or services for them.

Financing—laws that pertain to sources of funding and methods of payment for long-term care services.

Home Care—laws that pertain to services and activities that provide assistance with activities of daily living to individuals in their homes .

Licensure/Regulation—laws that pertain to certification, licensure or other monitoring of programs and services for older adults, or of individuals working with older adults.

Nursing Facility Transition—laws that pertain to programs that help individuals in nursing facilities move from nursing facilities to community settings.

Quality—laws concerning setting standards and monitoring care received by older persons with functional limitations.

Services—laws that refer to actions that increase the range of long term care services available for older adults.

Task Force/Commission—laws that pertain to legislatively mandated entities to study long-term care.

Workforce—laws that pertain to individuals who are working within the long-term care delivery system.
