New SCHIP Enrollment FiguresState Budget & Tax NewsVolume 20, No. 3: February 1, 2001Reprinted with permission from State Budget & Tax News The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently released State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) enrollment figures for Fiscal Year (FY) 2000. The new numbers show that more than 3.3 million children were enrolled in FY 2000, a 70 percent increase over the number of children enrolled in FY 1999.
Fifteen states experienced more than a 100 percent increase in enrollment from last year. North Dakota saw the largest percentage increase (867 percent), followed by Montana (716 percent) and Maryland (415 percent). Twenty-three states are above the national average of 70 percent. Two states (Alabama and New Hampshire) and the District of Columbia reported reductions in their SCHIP enrollments. Hawaii, Washington and Wyoming did not have their programs implemented in FY 1999. Minnesota’s enrollment numbers are low because the state’s Medicaid program covered children in families with incomes up to 275 percent of the federal poverty level prior to the SCHIP law. Posted February 2001, reviewed December 2003. |
