"Portland Reaps Green Dividends"

Portland and the state of Oregon have put a considerable amount of effort into making Portland a compact, transit-friendly city, such as passing the Oregon Bike Bill in 1971 and establishing an urban growth ring around the city. Now, numerous reports and indices show that this investment has paid off, as Portland benefits from less pollution, more transit-use, and a stronger economy due to these efforts. A new report from CEOs for Cities summarizes these benefits.

In addition, Portland has achieved nationwide recognition as the best city for bicycling and has the highest percentage of commuters riding bikes to work in the country, read this article from The Oregonian.

Also, a recent New York Times article details Portland's use of "bike boxes" and other innovative bicycle infrastructure approaches to create safer routes for the burgeoning numbers of cyclists in the city.
