William J. Angell is a University of Minnesota Professor and Director of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) founded Regional Radon Training Centers, the Midwest Universities Radon Consortium. He chairs the World Health Organization’s International Radon Project’s Prevention and Mitigation Working Group. Professor Angell is President of the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists. He has been a Visiting Scientist at two national laboratories, the EPA’s Radiation and Indoor Environments National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Angell has testified before the U.S. Congress concerning the scientific and technical foundation for the U.S. radon policy. He has chaired two external peer review committees that assessed EPA’s radon reduction research involving houses and large buildings including schools. He has received EPA’s exceptional service award for his work in radon training.

Susie Shimek began working on the radon issue when it came to national prominence. In 1985, after seven years in Field Enforcement in outdoor air for the Tennessee Division of Air Pollution Control, she helped organize the Tennessee Radon Program, serving as Program Manager from 1991-1995. Susie joined the EPA Indoor Environments Division in 1995 serving as radon team leader for four years. She assists regional state and local radon programs develop strategies to achieve and capture results. If you are counting, that is 23 years working on radon.

Tobie Bernstein is a Senior Attorney at the Environmental Law Institute, a non-profit research and education center in Washington, D.C. Tobie directs ELI’s work on environmental and health issues relating to the built environment, providing law and policy research, analysis and education to help strengthen state and local programs in this area. ELI works to improve indoor air quality in schools, multi-family housing, and other types of buildings. ELI also analyzes state and local polices that advance the integration of health and environmental goals in building design and construction. Prior to joining ELI, Tobie worked as an attorney for the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., where she represented clients in housing, consumer, health and family law matters. Tobie received her B.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and her law degree from Harvard Law School.
