DOE Complex Facilities Undergoing CleanupFernald Site - Fernald is a former uranium processing facility located in southwest Ohio undergoing environmental remediation. Hanford Site - The 586-square-mile Hanford Site is located along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington State. A plutonium production complex with nine nuclear reactors and associated processing facilities, Hanford played a pivotal role in the nation's defense for more than 40 years, beginning in the 1940s with the Manhattan Project. Today, Hanford is engaged in the world's largest environmental cleanup project, with a number of overlapping technical, political, regulatory, financial and cultural issues. Miamisburg Environmental Restoration Project - The Mound Facility-located just outside of Miamisburg, Ohio-was constructed in the 1940s with a primary mission of nuclear weapons production. Cleanup of the site is expected to be complete by March 2006. Nevada Test Site - The Nevada Test Site is a unique national resource, a massive outdoor laboratory and national experimental center. Established as the Atomic Energy Commission's on-continent providing ground, the Nevada Test Sites has seen more than four decades of nuclear weapons testing. Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant - The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, located approximately 15 miles west of Paducah, Kentucky, previously produced low assay enriched uranium for use as commercial nuclear reactor fuel. Now out of the enrichment business, DOE focuses its resources and efforts on environmental restoration of the Paducah site and managing the waste produced in the past and currently. Savannah River Site - The Savannah River Site -located near Aiken, South Carolina-focuses on three mission areas-nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, nuclear materials stewardship and environmental management-in overseeing the management and operations contractor and other contractors at the Savannah River Site, a key Department of Energy (DOE) facility, associated with products and services essential to achieving the DOE's goals. |
