Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) - Fact Sheet

Location / Size:
Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has two main facilities, one in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the other in Livermore, California.Sandia Picture

Mission:
In July 1945, a forerunner of the Sandia Laboratory was established at Oxnard Field in Albuquerque to handle future weapons development, testing, and bomb assembly for the Manhattan Engineer District.

SNL's current mission is to develop technologies to sustain, modernize, and protect the U.S. nuclear arsenal, prevent the spread of WMD, defend against terrorism, protect the national infrastructures, ensure stable energy and water supplies, and provide new capabilities to the armed forces. SNL is a government-owned/contractor-operated facility. Originally managed by AT&T, SNL has been managed by Lockheed Martin since 1993.

Size of Workforce:
The Albuquerque headquarters for SNL employs approximately 6,600 people, while the smaller Livermore laboratory employees about 850.

Site Budget for Environmental Management:
The DOE's Office of Environmental Management cleanup project for Sandia is expected to reach completion in 2006, therefore the DOE has not request EM funds for FY 2007.

FY 2005 appropriation……………$20 million
FY 2006 appropriation……………$10 million

Site Specific Advisory Board (SSAB) and/or Citizen’s Advisory Board (CAB):
The SNL Citizens Advisory Board has been involved with long-term stewardship planning for environmental restoration sites.

Tribal Concerns:
The Isleta Pueblo reservation is located about six miles downstream from Albuquerque and therefore feels impacted by SNL operations. This tribe has focused its involvement on establishing the Isleta Environmental Program for studying affected lands. All tribes connected with nuclear facilities also have general concerns in the areas of transportation and emergency response, cultural resource management, and the protection of sacred sites.
