Belmar, Colorado Site Visit

Brownfields Cleanup and Redevelopment Policy Options

Belmar Urban Center·Lakewood, Colorado
September 29, 2005

Preliminary Agenda

Brownfields typically are abandoned or underutilized commercial and industrial properties that are contaminated or perceived to be contaminated, thereby affecting their future use.  They may pose an environmental or public health threat if they are not cleaned up.  Because they are not economically productive, they fail to generate tax revenue and employment opportunities for surrounding communities.  The Belmar Urban Center sits on a 103-acre former shopping mall that had suffered soil and groundwater contamination and a 90-percent vacancy rate.  It is now a mixed-use development neighborhood with residential, retail, office, public and open space.  This workshop will explore the site and discuss the types of state, local and federal policy options make it work.
