copperMetal Theft

December 2007

Copper and other precious metals are used in many products and industries, including computers, electronics equipment, for wiring and pipe, on boats and in industrial and manufacturing components. The price rise of these metals is due to the global demand growth for copper, especially in growing China, where it is used primarily in electric generation systems.  State legislators are taking action to increase penalties and track potential copper thieves.  NCSL has a list of current statutes and is tracking legislation.
