Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Updated March 7, 2006
NCSL does not endorse the sites listed below, but recommends exploring the vast resources devoted to renewable energy on the World Wide Web. These site links offer opportunities to find and share information on renewable energy.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has many sites devoted to renewable energy.
- The Energy Information Administration offers a wealth of information on many energy issues.
- Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN) is a comprehensive resource for energy efficiency and renewable energy information.
- State Energy Alternatives - As part of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has established this site to give specific information on the potential of selected renewable energy resources in each state as well as background information on each state's electricity sector. The site describes five renewable energy technologies (wind, photovoltaics, biomass, solar thermal and geothermal) with electricity-generating capability, and includes cost information and examples of existing applications. This site also describes policy options that lawmakers around the country are using to incorporate renewable energy into their state energy portfolios.
- A joint project between Sandia National Laboratories and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Sun Lab site offers information on renewable energy with a focus on solar power technologies.
General Renewable Energy Sites
The Center for Energy Efficiency & Renewable Technologies (CEERT) is a virtual "clean power" guide with regularly updated information on energy alternatives.
The Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy is a great resource for state financial incentives, programs and regulatory policies and also offers a searchable on-line database.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory supports federal, national and international programs devoted to research and development and encouragement of renewable energy technologies.
Public Citizen Critical Mass Energy Project offers issue updates, publications and Internet resources.
The Union of Concerned Scientists, a non-profit alliance of scientists and citizens working for a healthy environment and a safe world, UCS researches and promotes clean energy and transportation technologies.
HYDROGEN/ FUEL CELLS
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies Program conducts research on advanced technologies to produce, store and safely use this fuel.
The Department of Energy's Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies Program is working with partners to accelerate the development and successful market introduction of these technologies.
BIOMASS
Since 1993, the Department of Energy's Biomass Program has sought ways to facilitate expanded use of biomass resources for the production of renewable transportation fuels and electric power.
The Biomass Energy Research Association is an association of biofuels researchers, companies, and advocates who promote education and research on renewable biomass energy and waste-to-energy systems.
25x'25 is an initiative with a vision that by the year 2025, America's working lands will provide 25 percent of the nation's energy from renewable resources.
GEOTHERMAL
The U.S. DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN)'s Office of Geothermal Technologies offers technical data, geothermal application history, and other resources.
The DOE Geothermal Energy Technology Site features articles, frequently asked questions and a calendar of events.
The Geothermal Information Office is a collaborative effort between Alliant Utilities and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to provide basic educational information to anyone interested in learning about innovative, efficient, and environmentally friendly heating and cooling technology.
HYDROPOWER
The U.S. DOE has excellent resources on hydropower. In addition, both national and international organizations exist to promote hydropower.
SOLAR ENERGY
The U.S. DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN)'s Solar Building Program has information on technical data, laboratory capabilities and current technology. This department has a wealth of information included in their photovoltaic program site. DOE also has information relating to its Million Solar Roofs initiative.

WIND ENERGY
The U.S. DOE Wind Energy Program site offers wind facts, maps, publications and application information.
The National Wind Coordinating Committee includes representatives from electric utilities and support organizations, state legislatures, state utility commissions, consumer advocacy offices, wind equipment suppliers and developers, green power marketers, environmental organizations, and state and federal agencies. The NWCC also sponsors a site devoted to wind energy links.
