2005 Minimum Wage Bills

July 2005

The current federal minimum wage has been  $5.15 since 1997.  Currently 17 states and D.C. have established state minimum wages in excess of the federal minimum wage.

Thirty-eight states have introduced bills regarding their state minimum wage during the 2005 legislation session.  Summaries of bills as introduced are shown below.

2005 Enacted Legislation

Connecticut passed  HB 6228 raising the state minimum wage to $7.40 effective January 1, 2006 and $7.65 January 1, 2007.  The Governor has indicated she will sign the bill into law.

Hawaii legislature passed S.B. 294, raising the state minimum wage to $6.75 effective January 1, 2006 and $7.25 January 1, 2007.  The Governor has until July 10 to sign or veto the bill and must indicate a veto or support for the measure by June 27.

Maryland passed HB 391 to establish a state minimum wage of $6.15 but the measure was vetoed by the Governor.

Minnesota passed HB 48 raising the state minimum wage to $6.15 effective August 1, 2005.  The Governor has indicated he will sign the measure into law.

New Jersey passed SB 2065 this session which increased their minimum wage to $6.15.  The bill was signed into law by the Governor April 14, 2005.

Wisconsin increased the minimum wage to $5.70 effective June 1, 2005 and $6.50 in October, 2005, through an executive order from the Governor.
