Overview

In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.  Although the Rehabilitation Act does not have any requirements for states, many states have adopted similar legislation for state agencies.  However, in this ever changing environment of new technology, it is oftentimes difficult for legislators to identify and remain up-to-date on reliable resources.

The Information Technology Technical Assistance and Training Center (ITTATC), funded through the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and housed at the Georgia Institute of Technology, provides an overview of state accessibility laws, policies, standards and other on-line resources.  ITTATC also gives examples of state accessibility initiatives, identify accessibility barriers and offer technical assistance.

Chart of State Accessibility Laws

ITTATC organized a state-by-state table that provides links to state information technology web sites, full text and specific sections of policy, laws and standards related to accessibility of information technology systems.

Technical Assistance and Training

ITTATC provides technical assistance and training to state agencies.  Their goals include helping states:

  • Learn what other states are doing to promote E&IT accessibility
  • Gain insight into successful approaches to implementing accessibility initiatives at the state level.

To achieve these goals, ITTATC created a state-by-state list of service providers that produce accessible media or provide services to support the production of accessible media.  If additional assistance is needed, click here.

ITTATC provides access to several types of training and training materials.  Their web-based training provides users with courses and presentations available on-line.  ITTATC also provides access to several different types of training materials and customized training.
