With the largest military mobilization in decades, states have offered a host of family support services and benefits to the families of National Guard, Reserve and armed forces members who have been called to active duty. These benefits include tax preferences, state employment benefits, education assistance and work supports for families and children. Life Insurance, Death Benefits and Survivors Compensation
Military Family Asssistance FundsTwenty states have enacted laws that create specific funds to help assist military families - these funds are often funded through income tax return check-off programs. Illinois was the first state to create such a program in 2002. California, Delaware, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Wyoming created programs in 2004. And, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania followed in 2005.
